The dawn of a new day in Turbeville

Dear Editor:
Just like the dawn of the New Year brings us excitement and change, Jan. 10’s Turbeville Town Council meeting brought excitement and change to the town. The mayor, Virginia Turbeville, and town council member Gerald McElveen were sworn in for another term in office and newly elected council member Ty Green started his first term in office. Also during the meeting J. Pat Coker was sworn in as the newest member of the Turbeville Police Department.

With the dawn of a new day, Turbeville will continue to see the positive and exciting things happen in and around town that will set the course for positive economic growth. Expansion of water service to surrounding areas, the continue project of downtown redevelopment, the emphasis on revitalizing the downtown business district are just a few of the economic goals this council will strive to accomplish during the coming terms of office.

Council is working to expand and improve police protection in and around our community so as to continue a safe environment for our residence and visitors. The addition of Officer Coker to the force will help in providing 24 hour coverage. The purchase of a new police vehicle, through a Justice Assistance Program Grant, will help provide a safer vehicle for our officers to run traffic and community patrol.

Another positive achievement for our town is the recreational program. Under the leadership of the recreation committee this program continues to grow by leaps and bounds. This year they have added youth basketball to the program. The soon-to-be constructed SELOC Park on the southwest side of town will be a welcomed addition to the community parks and recreation program. This town council is committed to encouraging the youth of our town and community to be active and healthy by offering these expanded programs.

Change will be the emphasis in just a couple of months as the town hall and police department will move from their tight, cramped quarters of the current facilities to our new town hall (in the newly remodeled Liberty Life building) on Main Street.  This new town hall will offer the ability to modernize and expand the services it provides her citizens as well as play a pivotal role in the revitalization program of the town.

Yes, just like the dawn of the new year brings excitement and change, so does this tenure of the newly elected town council.

We look forward to seeing the positive achievements of this newly formed town council and are excited about the future possibilities they will bring to this town making Turbeville a “great place to live, work and grow.”

Sincerely,
Pat Goodwin
Turbeville Town Administrator
