An open letter to the citizens of Clarendon County...

Dear Editor:
The beginning of a new year gives us the opportunity to both reflect upon our past and plan for the future. Almost 12 years ago, you both honored and humbled me by electing me as the first female Probate Judge of Clarendon County. The subsequent years have given me untold memories upon which to reminisce. I have taken great joy in issuing about 2,200 marriage licenses to those of you starting to embark on a life together and have happily performed the ceremony for many of you. At the same time, I have attempted to assist those of you going through the painful loss of a loved one. During my initial campaign, I pledged to use the lessons learned as a young widowed mother to compassionately lead you through this difficult process. I have taken your willingness to re-elect me to this important office twice as a compliment that I have succeeded, at least as well as I was able, in this goal.

I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to also thank the members of the Clarendon County legal community for all of their kindness and assistance in the past years. The citizens of Clarendon County are very lucky to have such fine advocates in the members of the Clarendon County Bar. Even though they may sometimes stand on opposing sides of an issue, I have always admired their decorum and dedication to both their clients and the laws of the State of South Carolina. I now count all of the members of the Bar and their support staffs as treasured friends who I would not hesitate to call upon in a time of need.

I also need to thank my Associate Probate Judge, Kathy Geddings, for assisting me since my election. Stepping in to attempt to fill the shoes of those able judges who had come before me was certainly a daunting task. Knowing that Kathy, with her now 23 years of experience, was there when I needed her, was certainly a blessing.

In preparing for my future, I have reached the decision that I will not seek re-election for another term as Probate Judge. This decision was reached with some reluctance and much soul-searching. In my retirement, I plan to travel and spend time with my family and friends.

As I prepare to leave office next year, I lastly wish to thank my daughter, Angela, the rest of my family and my dearest friends for all of their loving support and assistance during my term. I also thank those friends and colleagues in the Courthouse and the extended Clarendon County Government for everything you have done for me throughout my terms of office.

With warmest regards,
Barney Lee B. Morris
Probate Judge
