Fishing is good for largemouth and striper

By Terry Madewell

The lower end of Lake Marion seems to be a good place to fish, based on recent reports. The area from the dam up to the Taw Caw Creek area has produced good catches of largemouth bass and striper according to a few reports.

Also some big catches of big, bull bream have been made near the dam recently. The cold weather might slow this action down, so if interested, I’d go soon.

The catfishing action has been good throughout lakes Marion and Moultrie with a number of fish caught, both blue and flathead.

Access to the lake is still difficult at many areas, but some areas are open. Call ahead to the area or landing before you haul your gear, just to be sure. A few anglers have also resorted to fishing from the bank and shoreline catches have been pretty good for bream, white perch and a few crappie recently.

The largemouth are being taken on crank baits worked along the points with logs and stumps as targets. Some schooling action is still occurring in the upper end of the lake.

The crappie fishing has been good in 12-20 feet of water using live minnows or small jigs. Because of the low water, the traditional spots are not producing as well as they normally would in November. You’ll need to get out and look for some new areas in water that has enough depth to hold the fish.

The blue catfish are being taken on cut bait and the flatheads are being taken on live bream, perch and shiners. Some good catches of channel catfish have been made using worms, minnows and small chunks of cut bait.

Fishing along the South Carolina coast continues to be extremely good for trout and redfish. The redfish are being taken on live bait (mud minnows) and trout are being taken on green grubs and live bait such as finger mullet.

The bass and catfish action in the Santee and the Cooper rivers is also still very good. Plastic worms are producing largemouth bass in good numbers and sizes. Cut bait has been effective for catfish in the deep holes.
