Voters in the town of Turbeville went to the polls Tuesday to select two of four candidates for the Town Council. More than 135 of the town’s 400 registered voters turned out in what Election Commissioner and Town Administrator Pat Goodwin classified as a good showing.
Voters casting their ballots Tuesday represented 35 percent of the electorate, according to Goodwin.
Standing for the two seats were incumbents Dr. Kate Smith and Marion Dukes and political newcomers Doyl Gray and Jason Newsome.
Elected were Newsome and Smith.
Newsome received 88 votes or 61 percent.
Dr. Smith received 85 votes, or 59 percent.
Gray received 67 votes or 47 percent.
Dukes received 31 votes or 22 percent.
Newsome will be taking a first-time seat on the Turbeville Town Council.
He is a native of Turbeville and is the assistant manager of the IGA in Turbeville.
“I am very excited to start working for the Town of Turbeville,” Newsome said. “Turbeville is a lucky town to have four people who care so much about their town to run and I am humbled to have won.”
Smith, a native of Turbeville, will return to Council for her third term.
She is the primary provider at East Clarendon Medical and has served the town in several capacities including the Town Tree Board, team physician for East Clarendon High School and the medical director of the town’s fire department.
“I am very happy that the election turned out the way it did and I am equally glad that Jason Newsome was elected,” Smith said. “I believe we can all work well together.”
Newsome and Smith will be sworn into their newly elected offices on Dec. 8.
The Turbeville Town Council meets regularly at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at Town Hall, located at 1400 Main Street.
