Helen Brabham Smith

Mrs. Helen Brabham Smith, 98 years old, of Barnwell, S.C., died September 27, 2007, at her home in Barnwell.

A graveside service was held in the Manning Cemetery on Sunday, Sept. 30,2007, with the Rev. Posey Belcher officiating.

Mrs. Smith was born in Blenheim, S.C. on May 26, 1909, and was the daughter of the late Rev. Henry Clark Brabham and Helen Seaberg Brabham. Her father, Rev. Brabham, was the former pastor of the Manning First Baptist Church (1926-1937).

Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Furman University. She was married to Herman Edward “Red” Smith. After the retirement of her husband as Furman University head football coach, they moved to Manning.

Mrs. Smith continued to reside in Manning after her husband’s death in 1959 and carried on the operation of the family farm as a local planter.

Mrs. Smith moved to Barnwell in 2006.

She was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her son, Herman Edward (Terrell) Smith Jr. of Barnwell; three grandchildren, Herman Edward (Rebecca) Smith III of Mount Pleasant; Huntley S. (Charles) Crouch Lexington; and Henry Clark Brabham (Rebecca) Smith of Pawleys Island. She had five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Smith was predeceased by a sister, Elna Brabham Harvin of Goldsboro, N.C. and a brother, Henry M. Brabham of Gaffney, S.C.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1941 Savage Rd., Charleston, S.C. 29407.

Mole Funeral Home of Barnwell was in charge of the arrangements.
