Sisters Anika Anderson and Jamaica Adger both gave birth to daughters on Oct. 2 at CMH. Anika, holds her daughter, Bailey and Jamaica holds Addison. |
Sisterhood is a bond many women share. First dates, first loves, first heartbreaks and many other firsts.
But for two Clarendon County women, sisters Anika Anderson and Jamaica Adger, sisterhood brought another first … motherhood. At least for Anika, who welcomed her first child just hours after Jamaica gave birth to her second.
Ironically, both women also work at the same place, the Department of Health and Human Services in Columbia.
“It was fun being pregnant at the same time,” said Anika. “It was also a little unbelievable.”
The women also found out they were pregnant on the same day and had matching due dates, Oct. 4. Fate had a little different plan as the blessed events took place on Tuesday, Oct. 2 in the Generations unit of Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Both women had appointments that day with their obstetrician, Dr. Dorwin Moore.
Jamaica, 22, went first and was found to be in labor and sent directly to Generations. Sister Anika, 29, followed her there. While waiting for Jamaica’s labor to progress, Anika began having contractions herself. She went on to her appointment at Dr. Moore’s and was declared to not be in labor yet.
“Dr. Moore tried to speed things up a bit and the contractions came more regular, but nothing to get excited about,” Anika said.
Anika and her husband, Craig Anderson, returned to CMH to support Jamaica. During that time, Anika’s contractions really started getting stronger and more regular and it was back to Dr. Moore’s office. Her contractions were six minutes apart and it was back to CMH, again, where she was admitted. Jamaica’s daughter, Addison was born just minutes before Anika got checked in.
It was undoubtedly an exciting day for Grandmother Claudette Adger, who was there to witness the birth of both her daughters’ babies.
Both babies were delivered by Midwife Tonia Stevenson in adjoining rooms at Generations.
Anika’s baby, Bailey, was born a few hours later and Jamaica was there to hold her big sister’s hand as Anika gave birth to her first child.
Jamaica Adger and Chad Brown welcomed their second daughter, Addison on Oct. 2, 2007 at 3:19 p.m. She weighed 7 pounds 15 ounces and was 20 inches long. Addison joins her big sister, Arden, who is two.
Anika and Craig Anderson welcomed their first daughter, Bailey on Oct. 2, 2007 at 10:53 p.m. She weighed 6 pounds 6 ounces and was 19 inches long.
Both couples delighted in sharing the special gourmet candlelit dinner that Clarendon Memorial Hospital serves to new parents on the night before they leave the hospital.
For now, both sisters are staying with family and enjoying the special time that is new motherhood. Both are tired and a bit sleepless, but it is clear to see that motherhood is not the only bond these special women share.
