David Nelson Jr.
WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- David Nelson Jr., son of the late David Nelson Sr. and Annie Rhodes Nelson, was born Aug. 27, 1941, in Gable.
A sister, Dorothy, preceded him in death.
He received his formal education at Walker-Gamble High School, New Zion, graduating in 1959. He also matriculated at Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, N.C. Later, he served three years in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. In his youth, he accepted Christ and became a dedicated member of Melina Presbyterian Church USA, Gable. After relocating to Connecticut, he attended Promise Land Church of God, West Haven. David was employed by Connecticut Transit for 27 years before retirement in 2003. He also owned and operated Doc’s Food Truck.
On Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007, at his residence in West Haven, David Nelson Jr. passed away.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice H. Nelson of the home; a devoted son, Shawn Nelson of New Haven; a loving daughter, Tracy Nelson of Branford, Conn.; a loving sister, Pearl Nelson-Welch of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five grandchildren; three aunts; several nieces, nephews, other cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, at Melina Presbyterian Church, Gable, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Mary Rose Hagan and Timothy Howard.
Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.
Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
