South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford presents the South Carolina Economic Ambassador Award to Clarendon Health System Chief Executive Officer Ed Frye.

Clarendon Health System Chief Executive Officer Edward R. Frye was recognized last month as a South Carolina Economic Development Ambassador.

Each year the South Carolina Department of Commerce, in conjunction with Gov. Mark Sanford, designates outstanding individuals from each county for their exceptional efforts to further community and economic development initiatives throughout the state.

Frye has been at the helm at Clarendon Health System since 1989. Under his watch the hospital has undergone a massive re-construction project and added a broad range of services including the Generations Women’s pavilion, a state-of-the-art radiology department, acquisition of three nursing homes and development of the Cypress Center and The Zone Fitness Center.

In total, Clarendon Health System currently employs nearly 750 workers and their more than $22 million annual payroll is a large part of the Clarendon County economic picture.

“In addition to the contribution our employees make, the hospital serves as a major attractor to new business as well as the retiree population considering Clarendon County as a home,” Frye said. “We work diligently to ensure that Clarendon Health System serves both our current population as well as those planning to locate here.”

Frye said he was honored to be recognized as an economic ambassador.

“There are so many other people in this county who work hard to make Clarendon County grow and prosper each day,” he said. “This honor is not just for me, but for the entire Clarendon Health System family.”

Each year the Department of Commerce joins local communities to thank business and industry for its vital contributions to South Carolina’s economy. Ambassadors for Economic Development include local leaders from the private sector representing a variety of businesses and economic development organizations committed to securing new jobs and investment in their communities.

“From day one, our administration has been committed to improving the business climate so that businesses can prosper. Efforts like workers’ comp reform, tort reform, and income tax relief have paid real dividends in our state’s ability to compete,” said Gov. Sanford. “I’d give real credit as well to the individuals who have gone above and beyond to encourage growth in their respective communities. South Carolina thanks them for their efforts to create jobs and economic opportunity throughout the state.”

Throughout South Carolina, companies big and small create opportunity with products and services that benefit local economies, provide employment and opportunity and promote continued economic growth.

“Business and industry of all sizes represent the backbone of our state’s economy. They recognize the many benefits of doing business in South Carolina and are committed to enhancing our economic success. We thank them all for their continued commitment to grow their piece of the economy in South Carolina,” said Joe Taylor, Secretary of Commerce.
