Eddie Hooks
Eddie Richburg Alexander Hooks, wife of Leroy Hooks and the late Wilber Alexander, died Sept. 15, 2007, at Town and Country Hospital, Tampa, Fla.
She was born Sept. 11, 1925, in the Spring Hill section of Clarendon County, a daughter of the late John Haskell Richburg and Hessie Ragin Richburg. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. She matriculated at Morris College, Sumter, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education. She retired from the N.Y. Department of Social Services as a supervisor in 1985. She was also a member of the Clarendon Branch of the NAACP. She joined Spring Hill African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in her youth and later served as an officer at Emmanuel AME Church in Bronx, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
She is survived by her husband, Leroy Hooks; stepchildren, Delphine (Elliot) Howard, Barney Hooks, Leroy (Loretta) Hooks Jr. and Carrie Yvonne Ragin; one sister, Carrie (Willie J.) Nelson of Columbia; six brothers, Roland (Clotel) Richburg, Joseph (Gracie) Richburg and Herbert (Daisy) Richburg, all of Summerton, John (Doris) Richburg and Emmett (Elaine) Richburg, all of Miami, Fla., and Pedro Richburg of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday at Spring Hill AME Church with the Rev. Howard E. Conyers, Presiding Elder Alonza Middleton, Presiding Elder Willie J. Nelson, eulogist, assisting the Revs. Joseph Clark and Jerome McCray. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.
Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
