Maggie S. Edwards

Maggie Shelton Edwards, widow of Sylvester Edwards, died Wednesday, in Gable.

Born in Spartanburg, she was a daughter of the late James Shelton and Carrie McAbee Shelton. She was a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, where she served on the board of ushers, Willing Workers Organization, Senior Missionary Society, Pulpit Aid Society, Helping Hands Sympathy Club and the Austin Street Sympathy Club. In 1996, she moved to Gable and became an affiliate member of Melina Presbyterian Church, where she served as a member of the Presbyterian Women’s Organization.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include two daughters, Carrie (the Rev. Carnell) Hampton of Gable and Allean E. Moore of Duncan; two sons, Willie P. Edwards and Jimmy Edwards of Bronx, N.Y.; one sister, Rosa Mayes of Spartanburg; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Monday at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, Spartanburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Palmetto Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202.

J.W. Woodward Funeral Home Inc. in Spartanburg, was in charge of funeral arrangements.
