Sallie D. James

COLUMBIA - Sallie Davis James, 94, widow of Raymond James, died Sept. 11, 2007, at the home of her daughter.

Born April 14, 1913, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary English Davis. Mrs. James grew up in a Christian home and, at an early age, joined Mount Moriah Methodist Church in Clarendon County, where she was involved in several church activities.

After her marriage to Mr. James, she joined Congruity Presbyterian Church, where she actively participated in the ministries of the church. She served as a deacon, a member of the Presbyterian Women and a member of the adult Sunday school class for more than 60 years. She was employed with several health care services and volunteered with the Senior Center in Sumter.

Survivors include her children, Carl James Sr. (Emily), Shirley James and Randolph Wells (Christona), all of Sumter, Sarah James Chiles and Mary A. James of Columbia, Charles James of East Orange, N.J., E. Lucretia (James) Wells of Rock Hill, Edith (Malachi) Wells of Waterford, Conn., and Ella Mae (John) Gooden of Moncks Corner; two sisters, Willie Mae Washington of Baltimore, Md., and Margaret Frazier of Philadelphia, Pa.; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother-in-law; one sister-in-law; one son-in-law; nieces, nephews, a goddaughter, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by two children, Raymond I and Lula Roberts; three sisters, Emma Sharpe, Lucile Frierson and Marie Robinson; and two brothers, Frank and Eddie Davis.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Congruity Presbyterian Church (USA), Gable, with the Rev. William Jones Jr., pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Richard Dozier, presiding, the Rev. Dr. Franklin D. Colclough and the Rev. Richard Harkness Sr.

Burial was in Congruity Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.
