The Clarendon Scene ... as seen in Clarendon

Manning Elementary School had a group of fifth grade students that traveled to Washington, D.C. on April 3-6, 2007. These students visited several places of interest including the White House, the Capitol, Arlington Cemetery, the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial, just to name a few. Students were chaperoned by a number of parents and sponsored by MES teachers Allyson Goff and Denise Jones.

Leonard Eagerton of the White Oak community area, grew this 96-pound watermelon. He planted the seeds in February and using an old technique of covering the plants in the cool months, harvested several 75-pound plus melons. Eagerton also grows oranges and lemons. He obviously has ten green fingers!

Rubin Hardy, City of Manning Public Works Director, describes the wastewater process to sixth grade students from Manning Elementary. Teachers and students traveled to the City of Manning Wastewater Treatment Plant on June 4, 2007. Teachers and students were able to take a tour of the plant and see the process of treating wastewater.

Federal Mogul continues to be a leader in the fight against cancer. This year the team raised over $12,000 for Clarendon’s Relay for Life. The 2007 team members and team captain Debbie Rowell are already hard at work to surpass this year’s goal for next year. It is dedicated teams like Federal Moguls’ that make Clarendon’s Relay for Life one of the best in the state!

Manning native Craig Quentin King (center), son of Thomas and Paulette King of Manning, was honored by Orangeburg Consolidated School District Five as its 2007-2008 District Teacher of the Year. A 1999 graduate of Manning High School and 2004 graduate of South Carolina State University, King is beginning his fourth year teaching third grade at Whittaker Elementary School. King was honored earlier this year by WLTX 19 as Teacher of the Week. He now vies for the 2008-2009 State Teacher of the Year title. He is pictured here with his 2006-2007 class.
