John H. Dickey Jr.
AUGUSTA, Ga. – John Henry “Jay” Dickey Jr., age 65, died July 31, 2007, at Augusta VA Hospital, Augusta.
Born June 29, 1942, he was a son of the late John Henry Dickey Sr. and Robertha Player Dickey. He joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church at an early age. He received his education at Walker-Gamble School, New Zion, and graduated in 1961. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1966 to 1972 and was honorably discharged. He served three tours in Vietnam.
He is survived by one daughter, Cynthia (Ken) Morgan of Palmdale, Calif.; adoptive mother, Lottie Witherspoon of Turbeville; 10 sisters, Sadie McFadden and Winnie Lou (Melvin) Ricketts, both of Turbeville, Ethelean Caldwell and Vertelle Taylor, both of Baltimore, Md., Sylvia (Henry) Whatley and Stella Dickey, both of Charlotte, N.C., Edwina Player of Spartanburg, Slyvia McFadden of Columbus, Ga., Cynthia Stewart and Gloria Stewart, both of Paterson, N.J.; seven brothers, Norris Dickey of Washington, D.C., Willie (Edna) Witherspoon, Bobby Witherspoon, Curly Witherspoon, Gerald (Sherly) Witherspoon and Alex Witherspoon, all of Turbeville, and Tony Stewart of Sumter; and one grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Hickory Grove Church Road, Turbeville, with the Rev. Ronnie McFadden, pastor, officiating, assisted by Bishop Robert Wilson, Evangelist Rhonda Keels, the Rev. Willie Witherspoon and Evangelist Sylvia McFadden.
Burial was held on Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, at the National Cemetery in Florence.
