Members of the Clarendon County Master Gardeners made a pilgrimage to Park Seed Co., one of the nation’s most prestigious garden centers, on June 22. It’s a must see for any gardening enthusiast. |
Like kids in a candy store – that would adequately describe some of Clarendon County’s Master Gardeners on June 22 as members attended the first ever Master Gardner Day at Park Seed Company in Greenwood, S.C. Clemson’s Master Gardener Coordinator, Tim Davis, along with Park Seed Company coordinated this day for both South Carolina and Georgia Master Gardeners.
When arriving at the entrance of Park Seed Company the kaleidoscope of colors is truly picturesque. The mass plantings of every flower imaginable present a stunning effect.
The Master Gardeners were given guided tours through the nine acres of test fields. It was explained how each plant is tested for growth, foliage, blooms and stability. New plants that pass the horticulturalist examination will probably be offered to the public the following year. Mini-seminars were given by their experts every half hour.
For Clarendon County Master Gardener Annette Barrett, her favorite part of the day was the great deals on plants, buying those plants and enjoying all of the beautiful flowers that were on display. Another Clarendon County Master Gardener, Kathy Bryce, stated that she enjoyed the fellowship with friends, meeting other Master Gardeners and the different types of gardens that were on display.
Park Seed Company is a must do for any gardener.
Park Seed maintains nine acres filled with flower and vegetable gardens, containing several thousand varieties, including classic favorites, the newest hybrids and the prestigious All American Selections. From early-blooming Southern daffodils in mid-February to their repeat and ever-blooming daylilies in early August, there is always something to see in the spectacular gardens.
For public enjoyment, Park Seed’s grounds are always open for viewing and self-guided tours; though the best viewing times are when they are in full-bloom, between mid-May and late July.
Park Seed is located on Hwy. 254 in Greenwood and an easy day trip from Clarendon County! |
