Magglen J. McElveen

OLANTA – Magglen “Sue” Johnson McElveen, 71, widow of Fred McElveen, died Friday, June 19, 2009, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Born Sept. 21, 1937, in Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late Horace Sr. and Bessie Hickson Johnson. She received her formal education at Union Hill School and Walker-Gamble School, New Zion. In her youth, she accepted Christ as her Savior and joined Union Hill Baptist Church, where she was a lifelong member, serving on the mothers board, pastor aide board and senior choir.

Survivors are two sons, Rodney McElveen of the home and Bernard (Patria) McElveen of Macon, Ga.; a daughter, Demetria (Jonathan) Nichols of Kannapolis, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Dale McElveen of Manalapan, N.J.; an adopted sister, Margaret (Willie) Epps of College Park, Ga.; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 25, 2009, at Union Hill Baptist Church in Turbeville, with Elder Shelly Hickson, pastor, officiating, assisting Evangelist Alice Thomas.

Burial was in St. Mark AME Church cemetery, Olanta.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
