J.B. Chatman
J.B. Chatman, age 82, died Tuesday, June 12, 2007, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia.
His wife was the late Josephine Taylor Chatman and he was the son of the late Pete Chatman and Estell Pack Chatman. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was honorably discharged. He moved to New York and started working in construction, which led to Chats Construction, Queens, N.Y., and Chats Fish Shop. After moving back to South Carolina (Sumter), he started Chats Grocery. He was a faithful member of Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church.
J.B. Chatman is survived by four loving children, three sons, Willard Chatman and Irving (Delphine) Chatman, all of Sumter, and Joseph (Elfreda) Chatman of Queens; one daughter, Sharron Chatman of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Roy (Rena) Chatman of Manning; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by three children and four brothers.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 17, 2007, at Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry Presley, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Major Lloyd and Terry Johnson Sr. and the Rev. Dr. Leon Winn.
Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.
Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
