Gainful C. Brock

Gainful Cain Brock, 88, widow of Nettle Brock Sr., died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Aug. 28, 1919, in St. Petersburg, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Joe and Gainful Nelson Cain. Her education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. During her youth, she united her membership with Laurel Hill AME Church. In 1944, she joined Society Hill AME Church and was a devoted member of several organizations, including president of the missionary society for 13 years, class leader, senior choir, usher board, trustee and advisor of the adult choir. Over the years, she was the recipient of several awards and citations from her local district and conference. She was also a dedicated member of the Manning Branch NAACP.

Survivors include three sons, Eddie (Carla) Brock of Lithonia, Ga., Alvin (Jeanette) Brock of Edisto, N.J., and Nettle (Dianna) Brock of Burlington, N.J.; six daughters, Maudestine Cain of Bronx, N.Y., Mary (Randolph) James of Glen Bernie, Md., Betty Walker of Manning, Shirley (Bobby) Montgomery of South Ozone Park, N.Y., Barbara (Floyd) Hardy of New York, N.Y., and Leola (Leon) James of Morrow, Ga.; one brother, Eddie (Mazell) Cain of Davis Station; one sister, Inez Lee of New York; 32 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Cain and James Montgomery.

Funeral services were held on Friday, May 2, 2008, at Society Hill AME Church with the Rev. Rufus Gaymon officiating, eulogist, the Rev. Leroy Green, assisted by the Revs. Jerial Dingle, Leon Terry, Prince Sampson Pearson, Dr. James Gibbs and Dr. Gwendolyn Taylor.

Burial was in the Society Hill AME Church cemetery.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
