James I. Harvin Jr.
James Israel Harvin Jr., 70, died Sunday, April 20, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born March 10, 1937, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late James Israel Harvin Sr. and Evelyn Lydia Doughty Harvin. James was a graduate of Harren High School in New York City and majored in airplane mechanics. He trained in aircraft mechanics at Teterboro School of Aeronautics and retired from American Airlines, where he worked as an airplane jet engine mechanic. He was a member of MW King Solomon Grand Lodge, Thessalonia Lodge No. 68 in New York. “Jr.,” as he was affectionately called, was an active member of Elisabeth Baptist Church in Manning.
Those left to cherish his memory and grow from his love are a son, Levi Harvin of Laurel, Md.; two stepdaughters, Addriane Harris and Sidney Crawford of Charleston; a stepson, Nathaniel Crawford of Charleston; three sisters, Martha Harvin Horseford, Bernice Harvin Hayes and Evelyn L. Harvin; three brothers, Dennis A. Harvin, Thomas J. Harvin and Salem Harvin; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five uncles, Arthur Harvin of New York, N.Y., Willie Harvin of Trenton, N.J., Easley, Willliam and Moses Harvin, all of Sumter; seven aunts, Sadie, Shirley, Geneva, Arleatha, Odell, Betty Lue and Gardenia Harvin, all of Sumter; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 25, 2008, at Elisabeth Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. Ashley B. Vaughn, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Summerton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
