Vernell Ballard

SUMTER – Vernell Ballard, 67, died Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 18, 1941, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Jeff and Lillie Hammett Ballard. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. During his early years, he lived in Baltimore, Md., and Brooklyn, N.Y. In his later years, he was employed with Dawn Landscapers for many years and at the Sumter County Museum.

Survivors include one sister, Magnolia (Simon) Evans of Westbury, Long Island, N.Y.; one brother, John Henry (Geraldine) Ballard of Baltimore; one aunt, Lou Brown of Tabor City, N.C.; and one uncle, Marion Levy of Wilmington, N.C.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 13, 2008, at Mount Zion AME Church in Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. Willie J. Heggins, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
