Myrtle Smith

Myrtle Ellen June Wallace Smith, 87, of Sumter and Massena, N.Y., died Sunday, April 1, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 6, 1920, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Ulysses Stewart June and the late Amaryntha Broadway June. Mrs. Smith was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church, and a member and past worthy matron of Beuclare Chapter No. 20 Order of Eastern Star.

She was twice married, first to the late John D. Wallace and later to the late Victor H. Smith.

Surviving are three daughters, Marguerite Wallace (Jarvis) Planty of Massena, Helen Joyce Wallace (Bobby) Floyd of Santa Fe, Tenn., and Sharon Wallace (Madison) Lankford of Port Orange, Fla.; three brothers, U.S. (Doris Baker) June, Clyde (Vermelle Cross) June and George June, all of Sumter; two sisters, Gladys (Ernest) Johnston and Doris June Lewis, all of Sumter; three sisters-in-law, Estelle Dunlap June of Sumter, Bernice Wallace McCollum of Charlotte and Madalee Wallace Haley of Pageland; four grandchildren, Polly Floyd, Bonnie Floyd Blackburn, Melinda Planty and Brenda Planty Brue; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas W. June.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 5, 2007, in the chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert N. Rivers officiating.

Private burial was held in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to New Calvary Baptist Church, 38 Center St., Sumter, S.C. 29150, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.
