James M. Harvin

James McArther Harvin, 37, died Saturday, March 31, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Ella Mae Harvin and Thomas Smith. He attended the public schools of Sumter, graduating from Sumter High School in 1987. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in June 1987 as a medical specialist. After his military tenure, he was employed at Gold Kist and at the Sumter County School Board. At an early age, he became a member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the junior usher board and the junior choir. He later moved his membership to the Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church of Darlington, where he remained until his health failed.

He leaves to cherish precious memories, his father, Thomas Smith of Sumter; four sisters, Ethel M. Harvin, Shirley J. (Greg) Witherspoon and Latoya T. (Farris) Times, all of Sumter, and Norma J. (Maverick) Williams of Dalzell; six brothers, John L. Harvin of Hattiesburg, Miss., Leroy Harvin, Carl B. Smith, John D. (Shern) Smith and David T. Smith, all of Sumter, and George E. (KaTina) Harvin of Aiken; two grandnieces; two grandnephews; a father figure, Willie Lee Harvin; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ella Mae Harvin, and a dear nephew, Stanley M. Griffin Jr.

Funeral services will were held on April 6, 2007, at Berea Seventh Day Adventist Church in Sumter, with Pastor Daryl Anderson of Darlington officiating, assisted by Minister Terry Dinkins.

Burial followed in Florence National Cemetery.

Scriven Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.
