Doris L. Smith-Butler

Doris L. Smith-Butler, 74, wife of the Rev. Willie J. Butler, died Sunday, March 30, 2008, at her residence in Sumter.

Born June 24, 1933, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Annie Lou Woods Smith and the late Murray Smith. Mrs. Butler received her education from the public schools of Clarendon County and graduated from Durham City School of Nursing in 1955. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was a faithful member of St. Matthew Baptist Church. The eldest of eight children, Doris had a loving and trusting personality that drew people to her. She leaves a void in the hearts of many.

Survivors include her loving husband; five children, Willie J. Butler, Beatrice Clark-Licorish, Michael Clark, Gail Butler-Pressley and Pamela Butler-Smith; 14 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 5, 2008, at St. Matthew Baptist Church with the Rev. M.G. Walters, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Wilbert Witherspoon.

Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.
