At The Zone on Thursday afternoon, several patients and clinicians from the Manning Dialysis Center got together to help recognize Kidney Awareness Day.
“It’s a big issue in Clarendon County,” said Cherryl Blackwell, Director of Clinical Dialysis. “We have about 50 patients in Manning and 24 in Summerton.”
Everyone is aware of the March of Dimes, but March is also kidney awareness month. The folks gathered at The Zone were clinicians and dialysis patients and others who just wanted to get more information about one of the body’s most vital organs.
“Kidney disease is very common,” said Blackwell. “We want to help people be aware of the signs of kidney disease and what they should do and where they should go if they see some of these signs.”
Gov. Mark Sanford issued a proclamation about Kidney Awareness Day in South Carolina and plaques were issued with the proclamation on them.
Patients and interested people dropping by The Zone were treated to an information packet from the National Kidney Foundation as well as a fine repast offered by the folks from the Manning Dialysis Center.
Diabetes and chronic kidney disease are on the rise around the country, making events like Kidney Awareness Day and Month all the more important. |
