Susie A. Chatman
Susie A. Chatman, 65, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at her residence in Sumter.
Born March 13, 1942, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late John and Rosa Johnson Chatman. Ms. Chatman attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1960 graduate of Lincoln High School. She moved to New York in 1961, where she was employed with the U.S. Postal Service. After retiring in 1998, she returned to Sumter. Susie believed in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and studied His word. A genuine love for family and people in general, she volunteered and worked with disabled and special-needs children.
Survivors include two brothers, Raymond (Beverly) Chatman and John Chatman Jr., both of Sumter; three sisters, Ada C. Dukes, Ida C. Neal and Ruby C. Green, all of Sumter; four nephews she helped raise, Gary L. McClendon, Craig S. McClendon, Stacey Chatman and John M. Chatman, all of Long Branch, N.J.; an uncle, Leroy Chatman of Manning; two aunts, Lucille Chapman of Tampa, Fla., and Ethel Lee Frierson of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by two siblings, Alfred Chatman and Ruth Chatman, and a nephew, Glenn J. McClendon.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Marion H. Newton, pastor, and Pastor Nate Brock officiating.
Burial was in Hillside Memorial Park.
Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.
