Eva Lucille Harrell Barden

Eva Lucille Harrell Barden, 88, died on Sunday, March 16, 2008, in Sumter Health and Rehab.

Born September 11, 1919, Gates County, N.C., daughter of the late Maxie H. Harrell and the late Alice Rebecca Piland Harrell. She graduated salutatorian of her class at Gates County High School.

After graduation, she moved to Suffolk, Va., and was employed by Planters Nut and Chocolate Co. where she met and married the late Terence V. Barden. She later worked at Thomas J. Lipton Tea Company and retired after more than 20 years of service. She was a member of the Lipton Ambassadors Club.

Mrs. Barden was been a resident of Clarendon County since 1992. She was a faithful member of Manning United Methodist Church and Nelle Wells Sunday School Class. She was also a volunteer with Clarendon Memorial Hospital accumulating more than 1,700 hours of service.

In addition to her husband of 38 years, Mrs. Barden was predeceased by a daughter, Lucille “Cille” Berry, six brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by a daughter Carol (Thomas) Peterson, with whom she lived, two granddaughters, Mary Alice Sutherlin of Simpsonville, S.C., Joyce R. (Mike) Gardner of Inman, S.C., a grandson, James V. (Jamesia) Green of Bowie, Md., a great-grandson, Brett “Sly” Sutherlin of Simpsonville, S.C., and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Burial will be at a later date in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suffolk.

The family would like to thank Annie Ruth Brewer, and the staffs of Branco Adult Day Care, McElveen Manor and Sumter Health and Rehab for their loving care during her illness.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
