Rev. Dr. Oscar L. McFadden

The Rev. Dr. Oscar Lee McFadden entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at Mariner Health of Sumter West.

He was born in Summerton on Aug. 28, 1927.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeff Davis McFadden and Carrie Lee Doughty Dingle McFadden, and seven siblings.
The Rev. McFadden received his elementary and high school education at Scott’s Branch High School in Summerton. He graduated from Benedict College in Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He did further studies at Columbia University, New York City, and the University of Bridgeport, Bridgeport, Conn. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in theology.

He taught at the following schools: South Carolina Area Trade School in Denmark, Benjamin E. Mays High School in Pacolet and Hollis Junior High School in Spartanburg, from which he retired in 1984.

The Rev. McFadden was licensed as a minister at Taw Caw Baptist Church under the direction of the Rev. H.H. Harvin in 1948. He was ordained in Day Spring Baptist Church in New York City. He was the pastor of Upper Shady Grove Baptist Church and Monks Grove Baptist Church in Spartanburg.

Survivors are his caregivers for 11 years, nephew, James C. and Rose Wilder; sister-in-law, Hattie Mae McFadden; nieces, Carrie Lee Spry, Mary Lee Martin, Omega Hilton, Mozelle Stanford, Clara Bell Jones, Henrietta Ragin, Naomi Blair, Elenora Abraham, Evonne McFadden and Patricia Johnson; nephews, Frank Wilder, Lomon Wilder, George Wilder, Leland Wilder, Alonzo Caldwell, Willie Thames, John Thames, Howard Dingle, Parnell McFadden and Willie McFadden; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for the Rev. Dr. Oscar L. McFadden were held on Monday, March 12, 2007, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton.

The pastor of the church, the Rev. Dr. William Johnson, officiated and was assisted by Evangelist Betty Johnson, the Rev. Johnny Lawson, the Rev. David Lawson and Evangelist Willine Creque.

Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Services of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
