Myer Whack Sr.
Deacon Myer Whack Sr., 89, widower of the Rev. Annie Martin Whack, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
He was born Aug. 9, 1918, in the Biggers section of Clarendon County. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior and joined Mount Calvary Fire Baptized Holiness Church of God of the Americas, where he remained a lifelong member and served as chairman of the deacon board, trustee, finance board, custodian of the church and in many other capacities. He was employed by Coffey Gulf Station, Stewart Hardin Car Dealer and retired from F.E. Dubose Vocational School, Manning.
He is survived by four daughters, the Rev. Odessa (Marshall) McCoy of Thomasville, N.C., the Rev. Ethel (Gunter) Sweat of Manning, Vertelle (Henry) McFadden of Brandon, Fla., and Wanda (Clarence) Taylor of Manning; two sons, John (Sarah) Whack of Manning and Kenneth Whack of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; seven sisters, Sarah Sweat of Sumter, Sue Thompson and Louise Johnson, both of New York, N.Y., Ollie Pitts and Grace Whack, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., the Rev. Clara Baxter of Boston, Mass., and Helen Whack of Miami, Fla.; a special daughter, Dr. Anne W. Fannin; three adopted daughters, Vera Johnson, Laura Simon and Elizabeth H. Rumph; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son, Myer Whack Jr.; four sisters; and three brothers.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 2, 2008, at Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church in Manning, with the Rev. Henry K. Presley, pastor, the Rev. Delmar Calloway presiding, the Rev. Charles Riley, assisting the Rev. Larry Raiford, the Rev. Annie Riley, the Rev. Dennis Jeffcoat, Bishop Nathaniel J. Roach Sr., the Rev. George P. Windley and Elder Keith J. Smith Sr., eulogist.
Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.
Samuels Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
