For Rev. Rob Pierce of the Summerton Baptist Church, the annual Men’s Wild Game Supper is more than just good food and good times; to him it is a spiritual reawakening of sorts.
“Its main goal is for all men to come together to hear an inspirational message in a place that is non-threatening while having a good time,” Pierce said. “It is a Christian atmosphere and people have often been saved or recommitted their life to Christ during the event.”
The sixth annual supper will be held at 7 p.m. on March 13 at Bell-View Farm on Goat Island. If Pierce’s predictions are correct, the head count could far surpass more than 1,600 people.
“The first year we had 400 and it has grown since then. Last year we had 1,600 and so this is a big deal. It takes volunteers and resources from all the churches in the area,” he said.
The featured speaker for this year’s supper is Rick Burgess, one of the hosts of the wildly popular syndicated morning radio show, “The Rick and Bubba Show.”
“Rick is a Christian and talks about his faith on air,” Pierce said. “He is very entertaining and is a very jovial speaker.”
Burgess himself said he knows exactly what he is going to talk about and exactly why he decided to speak at the supper.
“I really have a passion to speak before men. One thing I think our society is missing is real men,” he said. “The generation before us accomplished a lot and there is a remnant of men who can do good things such as lead their homes and their families.”
Pierce said since this year’s supper promises to the biggest to date, the supper should have a little miracle of its own. With crowds estimated at 1,800 to 2,000 people, the Summerton minister said he would able to get them all fed in 30 minutes or less.
“The line will be long but we will serve everyone,” he said.
Pierce said the supper would include: venison, boiled shrimp, marinated grilled quail, wild boar, fried turkey and all the fixing and trimmings.
Admission is free but tickets are required. For tickets call the Summerton Baptist Church at 460-6023. |
