It’s a hot job but we’re so glad they do it. Thousands of fresh oysters will be roasted on Feb. 23 for the annual Jr. Chamber Oyster Roast at the Manning National Guard Armory. Habitat for Humanity will have their traditional silent auction as well.

As you get closer to the National Guard Armory the sweet and sensuous aroma of hundreds of dozens of Oceanic gems – Atlantic Oysters – hits you with an unmistakable smell.

Guests at the Feb. 23 Clarendon Junior Chamber Oyster Roast will dine on 150 bushels of oysters and Beaufort Stew (a blend of shrimp, smoked sausage, potatoes and corn on the cob), coleslaw and sweet tea, all made by the members of the Junior Chamber. Beer will also be available for an additional charge.

For the seventh time, the Habitat For Humanity will “piggy back” their silent auction with the roast.

“We are honored to be able to join in with the oyster roast in having one of the biggest silent auction fund raisers of the year,” said Habitat Fundraising Chair Cathy Gilbert. “Our thanks also goes out to the business community and citizens for donating all the items for the fundraiser.”

Included in this year’s auction are a golf package, which includes six rounds of golf at Wyboo and the Player’s Course with over 100 golf balls, tees and ball markers, a Deer and Duck Hunt with Sen. John Land, gift certificates from Woods ‘n’ Water Taxidermy and many handmade items.

The funds raised at the auction will go to build Habitat’s 14th house.

Tickets for the Oyster Roast are $30 and are available at Prothro Chevrolet, Terry’s Exxon and the Chamber of Commerce in Manning.
