Larry Staley

PINEWOOD – Larry Staley, 64, entered eternal rest at Tuomey Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, after a prolonged illness.

Born March 30, 1942, in Denmark, he was the son of the late Larkily Staley and Gladys M. Jamison Staley. He was educated in the public schools of Bamberg County. He graduated from Voorhees High School and Junior College in 1958 and later received a degree in agriculture from South Carolina Area Trade School. As a youth, he attended Mount Zion Baptist Church in Lees and Franklin Methodist Church in Denmark. In 1960, he relocated to New York City, where he joined the U.S. Air Force, from which he was honorably discharged in 1963. Upon his discharge, he found employment with the U.S. Postal Service, which he subsequently left to become a member of the New York City Department of Corrections. He retired from the Department of Corrections in 1995, rejoining the Postal Service, until his retirement in 2001. He left New York and relocated to Clarendon County in 2002.

He is survived by his children from his marriage which ended in divorce, Larry Keith (Salena) Staley of New York, Tamara Staley of Maryland and Michael (Stacey) Staley of Maryland. He also leaves to mourn his passing his sister, Zelma Staley Folk of New York; a granddaughter, Charlamange Staley of California; a special friend and companion, Elease DuBose of South Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Antioch UME Church, Pinewood.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.
