Marjorie Laurette Matthews Black, 84, widow of Jefferson Walter Black, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at her residence.

She was born in Papua, New Guinea, a daughter of the late Edward W. Matthews and Elizabeth Sobriski Matthews. She retired from the Army-Air Force Exchange Service and was also a member of the AAFES Retirees’ Association. She was a loving mother and grandmother and was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church.

Surviving are two sons, Michael J. (Anne) Black of Manning, and Christopher E. (Dottie) Black of Sumter; a daughter, Lorraine M. Curtis of Denver, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Chris Curtis; and a sister, Alma Gannon.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Burke, C.Ss.R., officiating.

Burial followed in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 332 North Lauderdale, Memphis, Tenn. 38105-2479, or to Tri-County Home Health Care, 2650-B Hardee Cove, Sumter, S.C. 29150.

Bullock Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
