James C. Phillips Jr.

Retired U.S. Air Force Col. James Carson “Jim” Phillips Jr., 87, husband of Carolyn Godwin Rawlinson Phillips, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at his home.

Born Aug. 14, 1920, in Manning, he was a son of the late James Carson Phillips Sr. and the late Lucy Rebecca Odom Phillips. He was a graduate of Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., retired U. S. Air Force colonel and member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Godwin Rawlinson Phillips; a daughter, Cynthia Phillips of San Antonio, Texas; a stepson, Dr. William Rawlinson of Manning; two stepdaughters, Ginger Martin of Manning and Julie Rickenbaker of Summerton; three step-grandchildren; a brother, Leroy Phillips of Manning; and two sisters, Carolyn Stewart and Corinne Jennings of Manning. Other surviving relatives include Marilyn Moorman and her husband, Dr. Richard H. Moorman, of Denver, Colo.; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty McCallister Phillips; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Stephenson; two brothers, Robert W. Phillips and Ashley C. Phillips; and a sister, Pauline Gregg.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Cottone officiating.

Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
