Raymond Eugene Shorter
Raymond Eugene “Gene” Shorter, 76, husband of Julia Frances Davis Shorter, died Wednesday, January 2, 2008, in Tuomey Healthcare System in Sumter.
Born June 14, 1931, in Sumter, he was a son of the late James M. and Ruth Craft Shorter. He was a retired United States Air Force veteran, and retired from the S. C. Dept. of Agriculture. He was a member of American Legion Williams-Burgess Post #68, the VFW, DAV, Eastern Star, a Mason and Shriner and a member of Manning First Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of Manning; two sons, Tony R. Shorter and Michael E. (Lydia) Shorter of Manning; a daughter, Peggy M. McConnell of Manning; a brother, James Mitchell Shorter, Jr. of Sumter; three sisters, Lula Ingram, Linda Glasscock and Juanita Pack, all of Sumter; four grandsons, Jason Shorter of Charleston, Justin Shorter of Manning, Richard M. McConnell Jr. and Raymond J. McConnell, both of Kingstree; two granddaughters, Kayla Ray Berger and Kristin Leeann Shorter of Manning; and a great grandson, Ethan Andrew Berger.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack L. Shorter.
A graveside service with military honors was held on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2007, in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning, with the Rev. Jerry Cottone officiating.
