Gladys P. Gardner
Gladys Player Gardner, 93, widow of Robert L. “Bobby” Gardner Sr., died Monday, Dec. 18, 2006, at her residence at Covenant Place.
Born May 16, 1913, in Shiloh, she was a daughter of the late Fleetwood Laneau Player and the late Mary Aretus Jones Player. Mrs. Gardner was retired from Tuomey Regional Medical Center after having served as a nursing assistant in the maternity ward for more than 20 years. She was a devoted member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Homemaker’s Club and Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Gardner was a devoted wife and mother.
Surviving are two sons, Robert L. (Alice) Gardner Jr. of Augusta, Ga., and James Ferrell (Maybin) Gardner Sr. of Sumter; a daughter, Mary Edna “Meg” Gardner (Kermit) Huggins of Hilton Head; six grandchildren, R. LeGrande Gardner III of Lakeland, Fla., Alicia Colohan of Augusta, James F. “Jay” Gardner Jr. of Summerton, William Lenn Gardner of Alcolu, Kermit “Kert” Casey Huggins III and Kimberly Michelle Huggins of Hilton Head; seven great-grandchildren, Collin Colohan, Bailie Colohan, Lauren Gardner, Jordan Gardner, Robert Reames Gardner, Katherine Ann Gardner and Laura Elizabeth Huggins.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, James Fleetwood Player, Earl Laneau Player and Ferrell Lucene Player; and two sisters, Bertha Fatula Player Johnson and Laura Vermelle Player Coker.
Graveside services were held on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, in the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Kirk Carlisle officiating.
Memorials may be made to Clarendon Baptist Church, 1780 Main St., Alcolu, S.C. 29001, or to a charity of one’s choice.
Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.
