Mississippi bus crash injures three Clarendon citizens

A rainy Sunday morning in Tunica, Miss. has left three Clarendon County residents injured, one severely. One of those victims, Bill Ellis, has returned home.
Residents Dee and Randy Osteen and Bill Ellis, along with traveling companion, Michael Baker of Sumter were headed back to the Tunica airport Sunday morning when their Harrah’s Casino motor coach hydroplaned coming from the hotel and flipped over the guardrail.

S’ton Back-to-School Bash to be held Sunday

They will be excited and have that bottom of the stomach feeling that something is about to happen. School starts for kids in Clarendon District 1 on Monday, Aug. 18. And thanks to a powerful partnership between two of Summerton’s leading organizations, up to 500 kids will start school better armed and ready to learn.
The Summerton Rotary and Summerton Baptist Church will sponsor their second annual “Back-to-School Bash” on the eve of the big day, Sunday, Aug. 17. The festivities will start at 5 p.m. on the vacant lot directly across Main Street from the church.

Alcolu’s reunioners reminisce on a once vigorous village

When leaving Manning on Hwy. 521 toward Sumter, vehicles pass through a quiet town that, these days, doesn’t seem to have much to offer. But this past Saturday, folks who grew up in the days of a thriving Alcolu gathered at Clarendon Baptist Church to reminisce on memories of family, friends and community that once filled the village.
The Alcolu Reunion is a gathering of people that re-unite under the common bond of growing up in Alcolu or being a family member to those who grew up there when it was a lumber mill village.
